Food System KPI Calculator (Production, Access & Efficiency)

Use this plug‑and‑play tool to estimate Production & Yield KPIs, Food Access KPIs, and Water & Nutrient Efficiency KPIs for any food systems project. Results are formatted so you can paste directly into a grant application, and you can export a CSV for reporting.

1) Project Inputs

Please enter a growing area.
Please enter pounds produced.
If you selected “Per year” above, enter annual pounds here.
Please enter cycles per year.
lbs / sq ft
Used to estimate “yield density multiple” vs conventional or your own benchmark.

Yield consistency (optional)

Enter up to 6 season yields (lbs). We’ll estimate variation as a simple consistency indicator.

Tip: If you’re filling out a grant, set “Reporting period” to Per year unless the RFP asks specifically for seasonal reporting.
Food Access KPIs convert your total pounds into servings and households reached. These are estimate-based, so we make the assumptions editable.
Please enter servings per pound.
Example: if 1 lb ≈ 3 servings of mixed produce, keep 3.0.
Used to estimate households reached: total lbs ÷ lbs/household.
%
If some harvest is composted, used for seed saving, or sold, set accordingly.
Example: weekly distribution = 52; monthly = 12.
Used to estimate individuals reached from households.
Used to estimate “individuals served per distribution.”
Efficiency KPIs can be reported as absolute (water/fertilizer per pound) and/or as reductions vs baseline. If you don't know baselines, you can still report absolute metrics.
Enter gallons (or liters) below.
Enter pounds (or kilograms) below.
gal / lb
If you have a conventional comparison, enter baseline gallons per pound of food.
lb / lb
Baseline fertilizer pounds per pound of food (or equivalent).
If your project measures irrigation in “minutes” or “events,” you can convert to gallons later — or leave water blank and report only fertilizer efficiency.

Definitions

  • Yield per sq ft = annual pounds ÷ total sq ft.
  • Servings = (distributed lbs × servings/lb). Assumption is editable.
  • Water per pound = total water used ÷ distributed pounds (if water is provided).
  • Reductions vs baseline = (1 − project ÷ baseline) × 100%.

How to Use

  1. Enter your growing area and choose the unit (sq ft, acres, sq meters, or hectares).
  2. Enter pounds produced per season (or per year if you switch the dropdown).
  3. Open Food Access to estimate servings, households reached, and individuals served.
  4. Open Water & Nutrients to report water/fertilizer per pound and optional reductions vs baseline.
  5. Click Download CSV to export your KPIs for reporting.
